16. Small and medium-sized enterprises, known as SMEs, play an important role in Thailand's economic development, accounting for the majority of businesses and source of employment and export earnings in this country. In February 2017, a Bangladesh-based SME foundation reported that 99.7% of enterprises in Thailand were SMEs, the second highest proportion in southeast Asia after south Korea at 99.9%. The government's SME support agency reported that SMEs accounted for 41.1% of GDP in 2015. SMEs in the service sector accounted for 40% of total economic activity that year, followed by those operating in the manufacturing sector (26.9%) and trade and maintenance (15.1%). Within manufacturing and export-oriented SMEs, food and beverage manufacturing accounts for 17% of total GDP contribution in that year, followed by SMEs in the furniture (13%%) and chemical (12.3%) segments. The government intensified its focus on SME development in 2017, launching a series of support mechanisms. These efforts helped SMEs strengthen domestic operations and expand their presence regionally, boosting macroeconomic development and stability. In recent years, however, the SME segment in Thailand had struggled and now accounts for the largest proportion of non-performing loans (NPLs). The total non-performing loans of Thai SMEs due to COVID-19 have reached 229 billion Thai Baht (49.8 billion yuan), accounting for about 6% of the country's total bank loans, according to the Thai Small and Medium Business Association. Saengchai, Secretary General of the Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises of Thailand, said that because of the lack of international tourist and the closure of the pandemic, SMEs closely related to the Thailand's tourism industry, such as restaurants, travel agencies and massage parlour, were hit hard, which is one of the main reason for the rise on bad loans of SMEs in Thailand. In September 2022, Thailand Non-Performing Loans was reported at 13.323 USD billion, which showed a decrease from the previous number of 14.948 USD billion for June 2022. 3-1. 21. Also called online marketing, Internet marketing is the process of promoting a business or brand and its products or services over the Internet using tools that help drive traffic leads and sales. These days, Internet marketing is often used interchangeably with content marketing. Content marketing serves up content that addresses our pain points, and is there when we want it. Here is the evolutionary pathway behind the modernized form of marketing that is most successful today. Selling no longer works. Why? Traditional advertising focuses on pushing messages at the customer to get them to buy. It’s interruptive, obstructive and intrusive. It shouts, “Hey! Look at me!” while waving its arms. You may try to avoid eye contact. But traditional ads are persistent. You know what traditional ads look like because you were bombarded with them every single day. Think TV commercials, billboards, magazine ads, radio ads and web banner ads. As I think around for a long time as evidenced by this traditional ad for “honest -to-goodness” coffee from the 1950s. Ads may still work in some strategic places. But Internet users can just click away from ads, if they don't want to see them, which is exactly what happens. According to a Pagefair report, 615 million devices in use today employ any blockers. Additionally, ad blocker use increased by 30% in 2016 alone. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Ads are annoying. And they aren’t the way consumers prefer to learn about new products anymore. Instead of a business shoving themselves in consumers' faces, they need to take a different, gentler approach. Content marketing is exactly that. Brands and marketers who use it publish content that teaches, inspires, guides or solves a problem for their target audience. With some handy tricks, the targets can find that content on the web, without it being pushed at them. If the prospects gain something useful from the content, they'll keep coming back for more. Finally, consumers can interact with the brand organically and share their content on social media. Trust is forged. Authority is established. Connections happen. These loyal followers can then be converted into leads and sales--naturally. All of the above happened with a focus on giving value to the user. Help users --- offer them value and they'll reward you in return. That is what Internet marketing or content marketing is all about at its core. 4-1. What is the main reason that content marketing is better than traditional advertising?

A. Because content marketing provides us with content that we need, and is there when we want it.

42. “If cigarettes had never existed and were invented tomorrow, what would happen? They would not be legalized.” The question was posed and answered by Javed Khan, former head of the London-based children's charity Barnardo's. Smoking is the world's single largest preventable cause of illness and death. And the United Kingdom is making a significant attempt to eliminate it. In the UK, 12.9% of people over age 18 smoke. The goal of this new attempt is to cut that to less than 5%. People younger than 18 in the UK cannot legally buy cigarettes. But all too many start smoking during childhood. The legal age was raised from 16 in 2007. Khan's team proposed to raise the minimum age further, by one year each year. Studies forecast that numbers of smokers will fall, but households with the lowest incomes tend to have more smokers and will need comparatively more support to stop smoking or to not take it up. At the same time, it is needed to prevent the law from being undermined. In that respect, researchers need to study what has happened in New Zealand. In 2022, it was the first country to introduce legislation to end smoking for future generations, which helped to inspire the UK law. But there has since been a change of government and the law was repealed. The new administration in New Zealand said the law hampered freedom of choice, and it drew attention to the loss of revenue from taxation. Cost–benefit analysis is not always appropriate when talking about protecting human health and saving lives, but the consensus of evidence is that the cost of treating tobacco-related illnesses and the days, months and years lost to ill health caused by smoking outweigh any monetary benefits from taxation. The original New Zealand proposal and the UK one are right. Tobacco, a product that kills its users, would never be permitted if it was introduced today. 7-1. What percentage of UK citizens over the age of 18 smoke?

66. Monday morning after a holiday weekend represents a psychological shift from freedom and relaxation to pressure and obligations. Our minds and bodies resist the sudden change. But there are ways to reduce the dread. It will still be a Monday morning, and a mountain of work will probably be waiting, but we can make it a bit less painful. First, schedule your Monday morning so that you've got some uninterrupted time to concentrate. A study by University of Michigan researchers found that people lost significant time when they switched from one task to another. The more complicated the tasks, the more time was lost. Second, get your planning for the week done on Sunday evening. This doesn't mean working; it's about mentally preparing yourself, setting goals, and visualizing the week ahead. This gentle transition bridges the gap between the weekend and Monday morning. Third, focus your uninterrupted Monday morning time on a task or activity you genuinely enjoy. It could be a creative project, a collaborative meeting, or anything else. Giving yourself even a small dose of positive anticipation can make a difference. Fourth, carry a piece of your holiday into the workweek. It could be listening to music that reminds you of the holiday or weekend, or wearing a new outfit you got over the weekend. This is a simple way to infuse a tiny bit of happiness into your day. Fifth, spread your workload evenly throughout the week. Have you ever seen someone start a new exercise plan and work out so intensely that they can't walk for the first week? Overloading your Monday with tasks is a surefire way to increase dread. Sixth, incorporate some kind of wellness activity into your Monday routine. This could be a workout, meditation, or a walk during lunch. Doing some simple exercise instead of sitting upright and staring at the computer all day can break up the physical monotony. The Monday after a holiday weekend won't feel like a party. But with these simple steps, you can reduce a good bit of the dread that typically accompanies the first day back at work. 1-1. What is the main focus of the article?

Mr. Cheo describes his general business idea simply: “I look for business opportunities that I think can work in the Internet space, and then I go to develop it, and then market if and sell it as a business.” To date, Mr. Cheo has launched four Internet businesses in Singapore with his partner Timothy Tiah Ewe Tiam. Their first enterprise, Nuffnang, spotted the chance to put advertising in blank spaces on online blogs. “In Asia, there are hundreds of thousands of blogs. It’s a fad that has taken off in such a way that the West hasn’t seen,” he explains. “This was a big chunk of Internet space that wasn’t being explored. It represented a huge audience collectively but nobody could effectively put them together.” Nuffnang acts as the middleman between advertisers and bloggers, putting them in contact with each other. Bloggers are paid per unique visitor and Nuffnang takes a cut. The concept has proved popular. Nuffnang has now expanded to Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. Mr. Cheo believes its success is due to the 渝粤文库 intimate relationship between the blog site and the readers which standard websites find hard to copy:” The blogs are a very interactive medium and they are a very personal medium, too. When people see advertising, they’re more likely to click.” Mr. Cheo admits that his idea isn’t unique. Great ideas are hard to produce. In business, “ultimately, a lot of the ideas are always similar, but you can’t just copy and paste”. Much of the process is “playing it as you go along”. Understanding the local market is the key, particularly when it comes to advertising. He takes this as the major reason why he chose Singapore to launce his business model instead of London. “I understood that the opportunities in Asia were far greater. London is a very developed economy. It’s going to be very competitive to do it down there. But we have local knowledge so why not come back and use the skills that we’ve learnt?” He confesses that he is conscious of the risk from bigger companies who might decide to do something similar: “The big boys will have to fight tooth and nail with me to get into theis marketplace because I know it. Even if I’m small, it just simply means that I am quick and agile. I am David and they are Goliath. (According to the Christian Holy Bible, David kills Goliath, the Philistine giant.)” 2-1. 89. The Chinese Semiconductor(半导体)Industry Association said on Thursday it opposes the US Department of Commerce's latest restrictions on US-based hardware manufacturers selling advanced chips(芯片) and chip-making equipment to China as they arbitrarily interfere with international trade. The association reviewed the US Department of Commerce's new set of export controls published on Oct 7, which included a measure to cut China off from certain chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment. Zhong Xinlong, a senior consultant in Beijing said the restrictions affect not only US semiconductor companies but also foreign companies that have advanced chip plants in China. To mitigate the impact of the restrictions on their semiconductor supply chains, global chip enterprises are working hard to negotiate with the US Department of Commerce. South Korean chip company SK Hynix Inc said on Wednesday it is working with its current suppliers and business partners as it is still authorized to engage in activities necessary to maintain current production of integrated circuits in China for one year without further licensing requirements. Samsung has production lines in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, to make advanced NAND flash chips used for data storage in data centers, smartphones and tech gadgets. NAND is not an abbreviation or an acronym but a technical term; it is a type of high-end nonvolatile memory chip. The chip industry's reactions show that the US government's restrictions on sales to China are, in fact, weighing down on not just Chinese companies but the global semiconductor industry, which is already suffering from a steep drop in demand for personal computers and smartphone components, said Bai Ming, deputy director of international market research at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation. The Chinese mainland is the world's largest market for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Sales of semiconductor equipment in the Chinese mainland reached $29.62 billion in 2021, up 58 percent year-on-year, accounting for almost 29 percent of the global semiconductor equipment market, according to data from SEMI, the global industry association that represents the electronics manufacturing and the design supply chain. 5-1 What has the US Department of Commerce done to restrict the development of Chinese semiconductor industry?

A. US manufacturers are not allowed to sell advanced chips to China.

B. US manufacturers are not allowed to sell chip-making equipment to China, either.

C. Chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment are not allowed to sold to China.

94. Young people have shown increasing preferences for flexible work — both in locations and schedules because of the growing digital economy. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's digital economy has increased by 15.9 percent annually since 2012, reaching 45.5 trillion yuan ($6.32 trillion) last year. Facing the growing digital economy and new vacancies, young people, especially those born after 2000, are expressing a stronger willingness for flexible work relations with companies, and also wish to become "digital workers" with flexible work locations and schedules. A report by recruitment platform Zhaopin and Peking University's National School of Development released on Wednesday said that nearly 66 percent of surveyed employees born after 2000 prefer to work from home. The number is higher than surveyed people born after 1970, with about 54.4 percent of them preferring the new way. The report said that about 76.4 percent of these young employees born after 2000 have a willingness to be flexible "digital workers". Also, roughly 54 percent of employees surveyed have side jobs using their professional skills, according to the report. "I love working from home actually," said Mi Lu, a 28-year-old new media operator in Beijing. "It's a much more convenient and cool thing. We work everywhere, perhaps in a cafe, or on a bullet train or even on the table of a restaurant." To cater to young people's work preferences, more companies have begun to include "flexible working mode" in their recruitment advertisements. The development of the digital economy also brings great uncertainties and a sense of insecurity to the working population, so we've found some interesting things during our surveys that over 30 percent of job seekers we've surveyed wish to have a stable job at State-owned companies," she added. The flexibility may also bring risks to workers' rights protection, according to Zhaopin. It said that though roughly 60 percent of companies posting vacancies on its platform offer insurance, the proportion is decreasing. Li Qiang, vice-president of Zhaopin, said that the greatest risk to those seeking flexible work is whether the company pays the salary fully and on time. 6-1.
